SWPPP
Preparation & Permiting
What is it?
SWPPP stands for Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan — a site-specific document required for construction and industrial sites covered under NPDES permits. It outlines how you’ll prevent stormwater pollution through Best Management Practices (BMPs), inspections, maintenance, and training. SWPPP preparation includes mapping the site, identifying pollutant sources, selecting controls, and ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal permitting requirements
Why it matters?
A SWPPP isn’t just paperwork — it’s a legal requirement for many construction and industrial activities. Incomplete or inaccurate SWPPPs can lead to violations, fines, or project delays. A properly prepared and implemented SWPPP helps ensure environmental protection, smoother inspections, and full compliance with your NPDES permit. It also lays out the operational framework for keeping your site clean, safe, and efficient.
You need a SWPPP prepared when:
You're starting construction that disturbs 1 acre or more
Your site is part of a larger common development exceeding the 1-acre threshold
You’re applying for coverage under a Construction General Permit (CGP)
You operate a facility that requires an Industrial Stormwater Permit
You’ve received a Notice of Violation (NOV) or inspection request
Your existing SWPPP is outdated or no longer reflects current site conditions
A professional SWPPP not only helps you get permitted — it helps you stay permitted by clearly guiding your team through ongoing compliance tasks.
